Pretty much the only time I ever used Adaptive shields was specifically because it was an Evolution- lots of capacity and health regeneration. The ability of them to keep you from dying to any old DoT in UVHM is nice, but at that point, just stick a Maliwan capacitor on any other shield for that nice +8 Special bonus and near-immunity to an element. I'm also against using Adaptive shields for the most part, but that's for a different reason I'll discuss later. The Bee certainly is superior to all other Amplify shields, but I still have a newfound appreciation for all amp shields after reading parts of the damage formula revolving around amp damage, especially since I've been using basically nothing but non-Bee amplify shields from level 18 to level 48 in my current Hyperion allegiance Maya run.
Novas are quite a bit better, especially the Deadly Bloom on certain explosive damage builds. Personally, I agree on the Spike shields. I also pretty much run my skill trees with this in mind but also rely heavily on building the characters abilities. If there is no choice for Shields, then I go to health, then gun damage. Your damage has to go through shields before it affects health. When I first started BL2, I put more tokens into health, but find that shields are more important. Usually Delay, then Recharge, then Capacity.
